The affordable housing and community development industry is dedicated to the equitable distribution of affordable housing across population groups, especially low-income, minority, immigrant, and other disadvantaged populations. Fair housing is most notably addressed by the Fair Housing Act, a federal law that identifies discriminatory housing and real estate practices. The Fair Housing Act of 1968, as amended, prohibits discrimination in housing and lending based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, handicap, or familial status.
